Anyone who has spent more than a few minutes watching some of the more partisan “news” networks lurking in the bowels of cable television is aware that America has grown more polarized in recent years. What’s not so certain is why. In a paper published online March 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences PNAS , a team of researchers at Stanford has devised a mathematical model that helps demonstrate what’s behind the growing rift. The prevailing sociological theory, known as homophily, is that like seeks like. Those who have similar opinions tend to aggregate together and reinforce opinions that grow more divergent from the center over time. This is the echo chamber model that would seem to gain validation in the era of talk radio, cable news and the Internet. According to this theory, we are polarized precisely because we have greater ability to choose our social networks and news sources.

In academic publishing , a scientific journal is a periodical publication intended to further the progress of science , usually by reporting new research. Articles in scientific journals are mostly written by active scientists such as students, researchers and professors instead of professional journalists. There are thousands of scientific journals in publication, and many more have been published at various points in the past see list of scientific journals. Most journals are highly specialized, although some of the oldest journals such as Nature publish articles and scientific papers across a wide range of scientific fields.

Scientific journals contain articles that have been peer reviewed , in an attempt to ensure that articles meet the journal’s standards of quality, and scientific validity. Although scientific journals are superficially similar to professional magazines , they are actually quite different. Issues of a scientific journal are rarely read casually, as one would read a magazine.

The publication of the results of research is an essential part of the scientific method. If they are describing experiments or calculations, they must supply enough details that an independent researcher could repeat the experiment or calculation to verify the results. Each such journal article becomes part of the permanent scientific record.

Officials at the U. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and epidemic experts from universities around the world conferred last month about what might happen if the new coronavirus gained a foothold in the United States. How many people might die? How many would be infected and need hospitalization? The assumptions, reviewed by The New York Times, were shared with about 50 expert teams to model how the virus could tear through the population — and what might stop it.

The C. Translated into absolute numbers by independent experts using simple models of how viruses spread, the worst-case figures would be staggering if no actions were taken to slow transmission. Between million and million people in the United States could be infected over the course of the epidemic, according to a projection that encompasses the range of the four scenarios.

That could last months or even over a year, with infections concentrated in shorter periods, staggered across time in different communities, experts said.

February 11, A new study on ice cores shows that reductions in sea ice in the Arctic in the period between , years ago led to major climate events. During this period, Greenland temperatures rose by as much as 16 degrees Celsius. From this they determined that sea ice changes were massively significant in past climate change events in the North Atlantic.

The study focused on a region of the brain called the ventromedial hypothalamus VMH and found that the removal of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 mGluR5 in that area caused estrogen to reduce the activity of neurons important for glycemic control, leading to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. These effects were opposite to the increased neuronal activity and enhanced glucose metabolism observed in mice with the receptor following estrogen delivery.

The paradoxical outcome on glucose metabolism was seen in female, but not male, mice. Prior research by others had indicated that the VMH region of the brain plays a role in managing appropriate levels of glucose production in the liver and utilization of circulating glucose by cells and tissues. Within the VMH, steroidogenic factor 1 SF1 neurons are responsible for helping to regulate glucose as well as lipid levels, e.

However, less was known about exactly how the VMH regulates glucose metabolism. Similarly, while the beneficial effects of estrogen have long been recognized, the mechanisms driving these effects remain poorly understood. When the researchers knocked out the expression of mGluR5 specifically in the VMH using gene editing methods, they observed a reduction of SF1 neuron activity and a disruption of normal glucose regulation, but only in the female mice.

Knocking out mGluR5 in male mice did not have these effects and their glucose metabolism remained normal. Noting different effects on glucose metabolism between male and female mice, the researchers examined the potential involvement of sex hormones. They discovered that estrogen, which normally promotes metabolic health in females, supports glycemic control only when mGluR5 is present in the VMH. Without mGluR5, estrogen actually suppresses the neurons responsible for regulating glucose — it becomes a metabolic liability.

Researchers discover sex-specific differences in neural mechanisms for glucose regulation

Global declines in insects have sparked wide interest among scientists, politicians, and the general public. Loss of insect diversity and abundance is expected to provoke cascading effects on food webs and to jeopardize ecosystem services. Our understanding of the extent and underlying causes of this decline is based on the abundance of single species or taxonomic groups only, rather than changes in insect biomass which is more relevant for ecological functioning.

Here, we used a standardized protocol to measure total insect biomass using Malaise traps, deployed over 27 years in 63 nature protection areas in Germany 96 unique location-year combinations to infer on the status and trend of local entomofauna. We show that this decline is apparent regardless of habitat type, while changes in weather, land use, and habitat characteristics cannot explain this overall decline.

Molecular defects critically impact the properties of materials. ILDaS is inspired by classical crossover experiments, which are often used to interrogate whether a reaction mechanism proceeds via an inter- or intramolecular pathway.

We show that if networks are designed from labeled bifunctional monomers that transfer their labels to multifunctional junctions upon network formation, then the extent of junction labeling correlates directly with the number of dangling chains and cyclic imperfections within the network. We demonstrate two complementary ILDaS approaches that enable defect measurements with short analysis times, low cost, and synthetic versatility applicable to a broad range of network materials including polydisperse polymer precursors.

The results will spur new experimental and theoretical investigations into the interplay between polymer network structure and properties. Synthetic procedures; 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra of isotope labeled macromers; methods of polymer network formation and degradation; supplemental figures and schemes cited in the main text.
